Slowly but Surely Updating
George Mason University's Center for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (CAPEC) is the reason this trip is possible for me. The scholarship they are granting is enough to pay for a summer semester at Chung Yuan Christian University's Mandarin Learning Center. I'll be in Taiwan for almost three months studying the language and exploring what I can of the country and culture (and the delicious food). Part of the reason I chose CYCU is because it's in Taoyuan. My extended family that lives in Taiwan live in the Zhongli disctrict of Taoyuan, making this a convenient location for me. I'll be able to get a glance of how people in this area normally live this way.

Casey here, 22 year old graphic design major at George Mason University. I’m the only one of my family not born in Taiwan, and though I speak Mandarin at home, I’m far from perfect at it. Couple that with the fact that I can’t read or write, and, well, that's what this trip is for. This isn't my first time in Taiwan though. I went once when I was a couple of months old, another time when I was five, and a third time seven years ago. This will, however, be my first time going alone, and though I'm staying with family, English isn't really an option this time. But that's the point. I'm doing this trip in order to better my Chinese so that I can improve my relations with my family, so the immersion will be a great help in working towards that goal.
